Phoenix (July 30, 2013) The Maricopa County Education Service Agency (MCESA) has partnered with the Maricopa County Office of Enterprise Technology to create a dynamic and powerful online community mapping tool. This tool, built on the popular Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, empowers users to search for community resources such as counseling, medical providers, mentoring services, shelters, recreational facilities, and schools within a specific geographic location. This is an invaluable resource for educators, service providers, and juvenile justice system workers. For example, a school counselor, probation/parole officer, or community member working with a teen recently released from detention/incarceration can find a school, substance abuse counselor, a co-ed soccer league, and a food bank within walking distance of the school and home of that youth. These services, coupled with a supportive caring adult, are a big step toward reducing the likelihood of that youth re-offending and re-entering the criminal justice system. The GIS Community Mapping System is just one more tool MCESA is making available to those people that are committed to ensuring all youth in Maricopa County will succeed-- no exceptions!
